Moving Truck

Packing for a move can be a challenge. There’s so much to keep up with, and while In & Out Movers will do its best to make sure the process goes smoothly, it’s important that the moving party takes the right steps, too.

Often consumers will choose to perform the packing of their household goods themselves.  It is a worthwhile way to save money on your relocation expense.  It is our hope at In and Out Movers that the following tips will help you to not only save money but to ensure your things are packed properly to ensure their safe transit.

So here are some tips to help get you started (in no particular order of importance):

Label everything

Each box should have its contents listed, as well as the box’s room destination. Unpacking at your new location will go much faster this way. (And be sure to label fragile items, of course.)

Take valuables with you

It’s wise to refrain from packing valuables such as expensive jewelry, artwork, etc. Personal financial documents should also be left out of the packing process.

Organization is key

This may be a no-brainer, but the more effort you put into separating different types of items into distinct categories, the smoother the unpacking process will be. Make sure not to use the “miscellaneous” label too much, or you may get confused.

Keep lists

Keeping track of everything that enters the moving van is essential. You’ll realize right away if an item is missing this way. If you don’t keep track of your inventory, you’re taking a lot more risks. It’s important that the lists be kept separate from the boxes, and the boxes should be numbered along with a general description of each one’s contents.

Pack sparingly

Movers charge by weight. Hence, if you want to save on expenses, you might need to cut back a little. Items that are more than a year old and don’t hold any sentimental value may not be worth packing.

What NOT to pack

Remember to dispose of all flammable, corrosive or explosive items well before the move.

Use padding

You can make good use of tissue paper, sheets or blankets. Bubble wrap comes in handy as well.
Start early

The earlier you begin packing, the less room you’ll have to make potential mistakes. Starting early will also help you be more organized and methodical in your packing, and is a good way to reduce stress.

Get suitable moving supplies

This is essential. Strong, sturdy boxes are a must, and should be reinforced with packing tape when carrying particularly heavy items.

Here are some tips on moving large appliances.

    1. Unplug the refrigerator at least 24 hours prior to the move. Throw out all perishables.
    2. The stove must be thoroughly cleaned inside and out.
    3. Empty the dishwasher units and remove the utensil holder/rack. Tape the door shut.
    4. Washer and dryer units require special handling. Remove all hoses and pack separately in a box, and cushion the rest of the box with towels or pillows. For the washer, make sure to secure the drum. See your washer/dryer’s owner’s manual for more extensive packing instructions.

When packing electronics, try to keep them in the original carton and packing materials if possible. If that isn’t an option, just wrap equipment such as a CD player or VCR in clean paper and pad them with bubble wrap.

When transferring sensitive information, you must be certain to back up all files on your hard drive and keep the back ups with you. Also, make sure to disconnect any wires attached to movable hardware such as a modem or mouse.

That should be it for packing advice. For more general information on preparing for a move, see our page on Moving Preparation.
